Stephen joined the Reinsurance industry 1977 taking a position with Sedgwick Forbes Reinsurance Brokers – soon to become Sedgwick Payne International and then E W Payne – where he learnt the basics of the business looking after the servicing functions for a number of the Company’s South East Asian clients.
In 1980, he moved across to the Underwriting side, taking a position within the Treaty Underwriting Department of the Copenhagen Reinsurance Company (UK) Ltd. where he received a thorough grounding in the principles and practices of treaty Reinsurance, and after a period of assisting the existing underwriters, achieved full underwriting authority on the Company’s Non-Marine Treaty portfolio.
In 1986, he was employed by City Insurance Co. (UK) to establish a new Reinsurance Treaty account for a small Company that had until that date only accepted business on a facultative basis.
In 1988, he joined Stewart Underwiting and was instrumental in the establishment of a new Lloyd’s Syndicate – B P Bartell & Others, Syndicate 1117. As Deputy Underwriter for the Syndicate he was responsible for developing and underwriting the Property Treaty account.
The end of 1990 saw Stephen re-join Copenhagen Re (UK) Ltd. to assume responsibility for all aspects of the Company’s International Treaty account, before going on to be appointed Director responsible for all Non Marine Treaty Underwriting.
In 1999, along with a number of management colleagues, he joined Danish Re Syndicate 1400 at its formation and went on to develop and establish a sizeable book of Property Treaty business that emanated from all the major territories. He retained responsibility for this book of business through a number of subsequent changes in ownership which saw the Syndicate renamed ‘Imagine’, ‘Max’, and then ‘Alterra’.
In the Summer of 2014 he established Stephen Gray Consulting Limited, a privately owned Company through which he now provides consultancy services to the Reinsurance Industry.
