Stephen has considerable experience in the Non Marine Treaty Reinsurance business which has been gained from working for over 35 years in the London Reinsurance Market in a variety of roles, both in the Lloyd's and Company Markets.
During this time he has developed a track record of business development and profitable underwriting through a variety of market conditions and was also involved in three "Start up's".
Positions held have involved overall responsibility for a team of Underwriters and a portfolio of Property Treaty business that included both pro rata treaty and risk excess business in addition to catastrophe excess of loss.
He has a detailed knowledge of proprietary rating models and considerable experience of working with model output on a day to day basis, both from an underwriting and an exposure management point of view. This includes a good understanding of the scope and workings of catastrophe models so as to identify and cater for any limitations or shortcomings.
Additionally, during his career he had considerable experience of developing and using ‘In house’ rating techniques, both to supplement the proprietary model output and to ensure robust pricing framework of non-modelled perils and exposures.
Stephen also has many years of experience in the structuring and placing of Outwards Reinsurance protections with both 'Traditional’ and 'Non-traditional’ markets, and in utilising coverage on a pro rata or ILW basis to supplement traditional excess of loss placements.
In addition to the above, Stephen also has considerable general business experience gained through many years of participation in a variety of Board’s, Committee’s and Practise Groups, as well as undertaking internal audit work.
Since establishing his consultancy business in 2014, Stephen has been engaged by a number of Lloyd’s Syndicates to act as an Independent Peer Reviewer. He currently performs this role on a variety of accounts involving the following Non-Marine classes:
- Property Treaty business (both North American and International)
- Property Direct and Facultative business
- Accident and Health business.
Stephen is a Fellow of the Chartered Insurance Institute and a Panel Member of ARIAS (UK)
